Culinary Newport & Boston

Day One

This morning we travel to historic Newport, home to the ‘Elite 400’. Our first stop takes us to the White Horse Tavern where it is said General Washington dined. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of historic Ten Mile Drive and a tour of one of the historic mansions. We check into our Newport Hotel for the next two evenings. Dinner is included tonight. Feel free to stroll across the street to do a little gaming at the Newport Casino. (L,D)

Day Two

After breakfast, we board the coach for a visit to the Kenyon Grist Mill. Upon our arrival at the Grist Mill we will be met by the Drum Family who will do a presentation in the mill on their white corn meal followed by a Johnny Cake demonstration and sampling. Enjoy a little free time at the Brick Marketplace for lunch and shopping on your own. Next we travel to the Newport Vineyard for a guided tour and wine tasting. This evening we enjoy a delicious dinner served at one of Newport’s fine restaurants. (B,D)

Day Three

This morning we begin our journey to ‘Beantown’, Boston. Our first stop today takes us to Johnson & Wales University where we visit the Culinary Arts Museum & Archives. The museum seeks to both preserve and interpret the broad culinary and hospitality heritage addressed at the museum. We continue to Boston where we make a stop at Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market for a little shopping and lunch on your own. This afternoon we meet our city guide for a tour of Boston that includes the Boston Common, the Old State House, the Freedom Trail, Cheer’s Pub and more. We check into our Boston area hotel for the next two evenings. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)

Day Four

This morning we enjoy breakfast before departing for Boston’s famed North End for a culinary tour beyond compare. The secret of Italian cuisine is the high quality of ingredients, a sense of regional tradition, and that very Italian love of life. Sources for ingredients abound in the narrow streets of the North End. But for the outsider, finding the finest is not always easy. Next enjoy some free time in the North End for a little lunch and shopping on your own. This afternoon we travel to the Sam Adam’s Brewery for a guided tour and tasting of this famed New England beer. We return to the hotel to freshen up prior to dinner. This evening we enjoy a Chef’s dinner served at the Rustic Kitchen in Boston. (B,D)

Foods of the South Virginia & North Carolina

Day One
Today we begin our journey as we fly into the Norfolk International Airport to begin our culinary journey of Virginia and North Carolina. We are greeted at the airport by our local guide and deluxe motorcoach. We travel to our hotel overlooking the Elizabeth River. This evening we enjoy a delicious dinner served at the hotel. Feel free to stroll the River Walk following dinner. (D)

Day Two
Following a full breakfast, we meet our local guide and coach for a day of touring. Today we travel to the charming town of Smithfield. Enjoy a visit to the Isle of Wight County Museum which was founded in 1976 by a group of volunteers dedicated to the preservation of county history. Interpreting local history, the museum’s exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a country store and displays regarding the ham industry and perhaps the museum’s most notable artifact: the world’s oldest, edible cured ham. Enjoy some free time to visit the many charming shops in this quaint town. Next we enjoy a delicious lunch featuring Smithfield Ham and other southern specialties at the historic Smithfield Inn. This afternoon we travel to Williamsburg where we visit the Williamsburg Winery for a tour and tasting. We conclude our day with a wonderful dinner served in one of Williamsburg’s Colonial Taverns. We return to our hotel for the evening. (B,L,D)

Day Three
A hearty breakfast is served at our hotel. Today we travel to Virginia Beach. Our first stop takes us to the Virginia Beach Farmers Market which is an ever growing staple to the city, and a beacon for local, sustainable cuisine. The proud vendors supply the area with fresh produce, meats, dairy, vegetables and baked goods throughout the year. Our in-depth look at the Farmers Market will take you to a few of the vendor stalls to meet and mingle with the proprietors. We will get a chance to learn about the different items being sold, and to taste many of them along the way. Our next stop take us to Virginia Beach’s Famous Boardwalk. Here we meet with our local culinary guide on will take us on a progressive lunch walk as we sample many of the boardwalks flavors and conclude with a taffy pulling demonstration. Our final stop today takes us back to Norfolk where we travel to the world famous Doumar’s Ice Cream, Inventor of the ice cream cone where we will learn and see production and enjoy a delicious cone to conclude our day. Enjoy dinner on your own this evening at one of Norfolk’s many restaurants. (B,L)

Day Four
Today we start our journey to North Carolina. Today we journey to Martin County where we learn about their agriculture heritage as we visit a local peanut farm and processor. We will have the opportunity to taste many different varieties of delicious peanuts. Next we enjoy a light lunch at the Deadwood Smokehouse Grill and Amusement Center. We continue to Chapel Hill, NC where we will spend the next two evenings. Go behind the scenes of Chapel Hill and Carrboro restaurants where traditional and modern ‘farm-to-table’ cuisine comes to life. From fine-dining restaurants to mom & pop shops, sample innovative and upscale southern dishes, authentic barbecue, house-made chocolates, local meats and cheeses, organic wine, local beer, and more. Known for being on the forefront of the Slow Food movement and for restaurants that have redefined Southern cooking, Chapel Hill/ Carrboro is one of the best places in the country to live and eat!

Day Five
Following breakfast, we board the coach for a journey entitled Agriculture and The Whole Hog. Experience the best that North Carolina has to offer. You’ll learn about authentic wood smoked barbecue and the growing farm to table movement. We’ll stop at the best and most authentic barbecue restaurant in the Triangle, where you’ll get to taste some of the finest ‘cue you’ve ever had and chat with the Pit Master himself. Next, visit an organic style, small farm, raising everything from chicken and pork to a wide array of produce. Later you’ll visit a restaurant that the farm owners have opened in downtown Durham. End the afternoon with a relaxing, beautiful, farm view with a homemade ice cream cone at a Hillsborough Dairy Farm. We return to the hotel to relax before our evening event. Explore a vibrant city in the midst of its revitalization and the restaurants, shops and people that are making Durham one of the nation’s cultural hotspots. From crostini topped with local produce and house-smoked meats to gourmet popsicles to renowned pimento cheese written up in Bon Appétit Magazine, you will discover all of Durham’s flavors. Day Six
After breakfast, we return to Norfolk or you may choose to fly from the Raleigh/Durham Airport. We return home taking with us many fond memories of our Southern Culinary Experience. (B)

Day One
We start our day this morning in the ‘Big Apple’, New York City.  Travel to the Chelsea Market and Meatpacking District.   Explore these two old industrial areas that are evolving into the hottest new destinations in New York City. Discover how these locations are becoming known for gourmet food shops, ethnic restaurants, boutique shopping, and nightlife. Taste delicious specialties from seven food shops during this tour.   Next we enjoy a driving sightseeing tour where you see the sights including the United Nations, Upper West Side and Harlem.  We check into our Manhattan hotel where we spend the next two evenings.  This evening enjoy one of the many fine New York City Restaurants or take in a Broadway Show.  (L)

Day Two
Breakfast is on your own this morning.  This morning we journey to the Lower East Side for our Ethnic Eating and History Tour.  Our tour features a visit to the Pickle Guys, Chinatown and Little Italy.  We will sample plantains, pickles, tofu, candy rose petals, meats, cheeses and canolli’s.  Lunch is on your own in the Lower East Side.  This afternoon we enjoy some free time for shopping on your own in the city.  This evening we enjoy a dinner served at Mario Battali’s, Lupa Restaurant, a Roman style trattoria.  (D)

Day Three
Breakfast is on your own this morning.  Enjoy some free time in the city to do a little Christmas shopping.   This morning we begin a pizza adventure.  The NYC Pizza Walk focuses on pizza from a historical perspective. We’ll start at America’s oldest pizzeria and continue to follow pizza’s rise to ubiquity block by block. Talking about pizza makes me hungry, so we’ll have slices at three of New York’s most significant pizzerias in Little Italy and Greenwich Village.   We travel to the airport for our journey home.  (L)

Day One
Early afternoon arrival at the Philadelphia International Airport. Here you will be greeted by your local escort and deluxe motorcoach. We travel to our downtown hotel where we spend the next three evenings. Dinner this evening is served at the unique El Vez Restaurant owned and operated by Starr Restaurants. Our dinner this evening will be served family style. (D)

Day Two
Breakfast is served at our hotel this morning. Today we travel to Chinatown where we meet with celebrity chef, Joe Poon. Chef Poon has been featured on The Tonight Show, the Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Food Network. Enjoy a walking tour of Chinatown that includes visits to a Chinese store, bakery and fortune cookie factory followed by a four course Chinese lunch. Next we travel to the Reading Terminal, home to Philadelphia foods. Here you will visit many producers as you enjoy samples of scrapple, ice cream, soft pretzels and more. Dinner is on your own this evening at a restaurant of your choice. (B,L)

Day Three
Breakfast is served at the hotel. This morning we travel to the Philadelphia Italian Market, 9th Street. We meet a local culinary professional who will take us on a guided tour of the oldest outdoor Italian Market in the United States. We will enjoy samples and tastings of many Italian favorites along our journey. This afternoon we travel to the Independence National Historic Park for a guided tour of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Dinner is included at a favorite local restaurant. (B,D)

Day Four
After breakfast, we board the coach and say good-bye to the City of Brotherly Love and journey to ‘The Big Apple’, New York City. Our first stop takes us to the Famous Chelsea Market, Home of the Food Network. Here we meet our local guide who will take us on a tasting tour that includes seven different shops. (Samples will be enough for a lunch). After our tour we meet with a local NYC guide who will take us on a driving tour of the city including East and West Sides, Central Park, the Empire State Building, and much more. We check into our Manhattan hotel where we spend the next three evenings. Dinner is included this evening at one of New York’s fine restaurants. (B,L,D)

Day Five
Following breakfast, we travel to the Lower East Side. Our “noshing” tour combines the history of the multi-ethnic Lower East Side with diverse tastes of the neighborhood.   Learn about the Jewish East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown as we walk through New York’s historic “ethnic quarter”.   As we explore the history we will makes a series of food sampling stops from some of the significant and historic shops & markets in the area. Following our tour we travel to the world famous, Katz’s Deli, for a wonderful pastrami sandwich. This afternoon we travel to the SoHo Neighborhood where we meet our local chocolate expert who will take us on a tour that will include five fabulous and unique chocolate shops including, Jacques Torres Chocolate. We will sample chocolates from each shop along our journey. Enjoy dinner and a Broadway Show on your own this evening. (B,L)

Day Six
After breakfast, we board the coach for a trip to Harlem. When people think of Harlem, soul food naturally comes to mind. However, Harlem also is home to a variety of diverse cultures…and tastes. On this walking and bus tour, you’ll taste renowned soul food as well as Caribbean and African cuisines at a variety of restaurants.  And between tastings, you’ll learn about Harlem’s rich history and treasured architecture.  It’s the perfect introduction to Harlem—you’ll have a list of restaurants and destinations you’ll be eager to visit again. You will sample enough food that will constitute a lunch. The rest of your day is free to explore the city on your own. We meet at the hotel this evening to travel to another fine New York Restaurant for our farewell dinner. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we board the coach for our journey back to the Philadelphia Airport taking with us many fond memories of Philadelphia and New York. (B)
